Position Title: Development Officer

Reports to: Director of Development, Leadership Giving and Prospect Management

Location: Boston, MA

Position Summary

The Development Officer for the Leadership Giving team is responsible for implementing a comprehensive strategy for leadership giving premium donors, which consists of those who give between $10,000 and $100,000 cumulatively or have the capacity to make $25,000+ gifts. The primary focus of the Leadership Giving team, supervised by the ‘Director of Development, Leadership Giving and Prospect Management’ and supported by a ‘Development Coordinator, Leadership Giving and Stewardship’, is to appropriately and effectively cultivate, solicit and steward annual leadership giving donors to grow and retain donors in addition to identifying top-tiered prospects who have the potential to make major or principal gifts. As a member of the team, the Development Officer must be able to reach goals related to portfolio revenue as well as donor advancement. This position partners closely with the stewardship, community giving, major gifts, principal gifts and planned giving teams to coordinate efforts in planning a fundraising strategy for mid-level premium donors. The Development Officer will work collaboratively within the Development Department, and with several other PIH teams, including Communications, Operations, Finance, Programs and HR.

Responsibilities

  • Manage an assigned region of leadership giving premium donors and develop appropriate cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategy to enhance retention, grow revenue and improve donor advancement. Will be required to meet set individual revenue and moves management goals.
  • Develop and implement personalized donor strategies for entire portfolio.
  • Partner with the stewardship team to design and incorporate stewardship activities into the mid-level strategy. Includes some domestic and international travel.
  • Create customized and personalized donor communications materials to help nurture and strengthen mid-level donors’ relationship with PIH.
  • Partner with the community giving team to design and incorporate direct mail and online appeals into the mid-level solicitation strategy.
  • Coordinate with the prospect management team to develop and implement an effective prospect research process to help identify potential major gifts and principal gifts donors.
  • Partner with major gifts and principal gifts officers to determine the best strategies for coordinating individual donor strategies.
  • Update and maintain constituent data in Raiser’s Edge with confidentiality and good judgment.
  • Draft and edit proposals, reports, and briefings as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree minimum, with 3-5 years professional nonprofit fundraising experience.
  • Ability and willingness to travel in order to meet personal development goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid computer and database skills including Raiser’s Edge, Excel, and Microsoft Word.

Qualifications

  • Proven capabilities in donor communication, including the ability to successfully solicit gifts and expand overall donor giving.
  • Ability to complete time-sensitive projects and balance multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other team members in designing and implementing donor strategies.
  • Experience identifying and sustaining new donor constituencies.
  • Success managing and prioritizing all tasks associated with donor development work, including writing successful and compelling proposals and making in-person gift solicitations.
  • Proven ability to use metrics to drive development decisions and achieve strategic objectives.
  • Knowledge of development best practices and the ability to apply them in innovative ways.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in a fast-paced, complex organizational structure.
  • Passion for PIH’s mission and ability to effectively serve as an ambassador for the organization.
  • Strong negotiation skills and maturity to navigate complex relationships.
