Position Overview
Partners In Health helped to lead the effort to combat the Ebola outbreak andnow is focusing to rebuild the health systems in West Africa. As a Surgical Clinical Officer in Sierra Leone, you will work collaboratively with the local district health authorities at the Koidu Government Hospital (KGH), and our surrounding health centers and community, in order to provide clinical care and to strengthen the health system for surgical care. You will advance PIH’s current health systems strengthening efforts by managing and actively supporting clinical service delivery, education and training, and systems for surgical care at the district hospital. Additionally, you will provide training on infection disease control and will develop clinical learning programs for hospital staff, focusing on safe patient care to meet national and international standards.
Specific Responsibilities
- Perform clinical teaching, mentorship and capacity building of surgical staff through participation in activities at KGH (district hospital) and our outpatient clinics.
- Provide surgical clinical care for patients throughout their clinical course: from referral to diagnosis, outpatient and inpatient management.
- Provide feedback to district PIH clinical leadership on strategies to improve surgical care and clinical outcomes.
- Support infection control and sterilization efforts within the operating theatre and surgical wards; and identify interventions for compliance and safety.
- Examine, diagnose and care for patients using evidence-based guidelinesand clinical judgment.
- Participate in development of surgical systems for KGH affecting all areas of perioperative care, including infrastructure, supplies and equipment, creation of protocols, and other areas, as need arises.
- Adhere to the health and safety protocols outlined in the PIH Ebola Response Code of Conduct.
Qualifications
- BC/BE in General Surgery
- Current or recent clinical practice and a current, valid clinical license.
- Successful completion of an accredited residency in general surgery.
- Experience in delivering health care in resource-poor settings.
- Experience in a clinical teaching and mentorship.
- Exemplary interpersonal communication skills required to interacteffectively with senior leadership, partners and clinicians on sensitive political and confidential issues.
- Proven commitment to social justice and human rights.
- Evidence of providing culturally sensitive and competent quality care in an extremely stressful environment.
- Ability to be flexible and effective in the face of unexpected challenges.
- Understanding challenges that the national staff face in their daily lives while trying to provide the best possible care for their patients.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to live full-time in Sierra Leone required.
