Position Overview
The Chief Development Officer will work with organizational leaders to assure that the organization’s systems and procedures support development, and that the development efforts are fully supportive of PIH’s programs and priorities and in alignment with the organization’s culture, mission and values. They will serve as a thought leader and exemplar on office-wide culture around development, shaping a shared vision that ensures all teams and individuals take responsibility for fundraising and that development staff are collaborative across teams. The Chief Development Officer will represent the development department on the Leadership Council alongside the leaders of all cross-functional departments and care delivery sites in guiding the organization’s overall strategy.
Specific Responsibilities:
The Chief Development Officer will:
- Plan and drive implementation of strategies to develop and nurture relationships with existing and potential donors and secure contributions from a broad variety of sources to support the organization, diversifying PIH’s funding base and supporting the organization’s mission and its long-term goals, fiscal health, and potential expansions.
- Grow the organization’s current revenue from philanthropy and create innovative systems and solutions for sustained growth thereafter.
- Assure the implementation and maintenance of appropriate and creative systems to support the development function, including but not limited to: volunteer and donor management, prospect and donor research, events and other cultivation and stewardship efforts.
- Establish performance measures, monitor results and support the Chief Executive Officer, development committee(s) and Board evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s development program.
- Communicate the mission and vision of PIH in alignment with the organization’s brand and communications strategy to cultivate and solicit funding from a multitude of donor sources.
- Develop a multi-year funding strategy and philosophy collectively with the Leadership Council and grow revenue in support of that strategy and philosophy.
- Manage a select portfolio of high-level donors and prospects among individual, corporate, foundation and public sector funders.
- Identify and cultivate additional partners to ensure progress in the organization’s capacity to fulfill its commitments to the communities we serve and amplify the importance of its work throughout the world.
- Create and manage all elements of the development department’s annual budget.
- Collaborate with PIH’s Global Health Delivery partners (notably, Harvard University, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute) to create and implement shared objectives and opportunities, leveraging the assets of a truly academic NGO and the depth and strength of the partners.
- Identify and employ creative and innovative fundraising strategies, tools and techniques that remain true to the organization’s ideals and identity.
- Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer in developing annual revenue projections across individual giving, foundation, and public sector revenue streams. Monitor and report on progress at regular intervals during the year.
- Advise the Chief Executive Officer, the Board, and senior leadership about significant funding opportunities and funding threats.

They can demonstrate the ability to create and manage multi-million-dollar development budgets.
- This person also has significant experience and success generating major gifts and developing relationships with donors. The successful candidate has genuine excitement for the work alongside creative implementation and the ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels inside and outside the organization.
- They must have familiarity and experience with a broad spectrum of giving strategies and vehicles, campaign development and donor cultivation. The successful candidate believes strongly in accountability, innovation and growth for their performance as well as that of their staff.
- They have an exceptional talent for matching the interests and passions of potential donors with the needs of the organization they represent. This person has significant experience with engaging with Board members, building community and partnership among volunteers, and leveraging peer relationships to achieve fundraising goals.
- A creative, collaborative leader, the successful candidate is adept at developing new ideas and approaches to cultivate major gifts from individuals, foundations, government and corporate donors.
- This person understands the nonprofit arena and the unique challenges of an organization that operates internationally and develops and maintains long-term projects and priorities.
- The successful candidate is a dynamic team builder adept at identifying, recruiting, mentoring and managing a top notch development operation.
- This person can demonstrate significant success overseeing the growth and development of effective management systems and collaborative strategies to conduct large-scale fundraising solicitations and the subsequent recording and tracking of results and providing effective stewardship for all donors.
- A creative problem solver, the successful candidate is a goal-oriented executive who sets benchmarks for theirself and the development team, regularly measures success against those goals and holds theirself responsible for development outcomes.
- This person understands the technology and techniques used to plan, implement, track and sustain successful, multi-faceted comprehensive, development campaigns.
- They have the ability to identify and pursue new opportunities to expand and diversify funding sources and increase the revenue base.
- The successful candidate is an exceptional people manager with experience leading and managing a large, cohesive team and in creating strong morale and a sense of community and belonging. The candidate is simultaneously able to demonstrate and promote cross-team collaboration to best leverage organizational resources in order to achieve revenue targets.
- This person possesses the ability to leverage and integrate the capabilities and skills of people across all levels and boundaries to create the most effective development organization. They can demonstrate expertise in managing a multi-million dollar departmental budget.
- An advanced degree in a related field is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of and experience in global health, demonstrated and fluency in French, Spanish and/or Haitian Creole are helpful, but not required.
