Health services in Liberia were severely affected by the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak. Many patients with infectious diseases of HIV, TB, and Leprosy were lost. In an effort to re-build the health system in rural areas very far from the Capital of Monrovia, Partners In Health is interested in mapping the catchment areas of their various supported health facilities in Maryland County – J.J. Dossen Hospital in Harper City, and Pleebo Health Center in Pleebo.
This will be done in an effort to enumerate households and thereby estimate catchments populations and the requisite number of community health workers that would be required in order to implement a household model of community-level accompaniment, with a focus on improving prevention, care, and treatment of infectious diseases HIV, TB and Leprosy.
First steps in implementing this model will involve conducting a house-to-house baseline survey within 5 km of these health facilities to gather essential health and demographic information from the catchment population that will be served by this community health program.
Mapping households, positioning of neighborhoods/zones, road and street access, health facilities, and municipal buildings of the catchment areas where our CHWs are active. We will then use these mapping data to develop and plan our program, as well as to track under served areas of the County. It will enable us to identify the additional number of CHWs required for recruitment in order to transition to this new model, evaluate ease of access to our supported catchment areas, and most importantly prioritize interventions for mapped areas that are showing a high disease burden.
